How Our Program Helps You Meet Licensing Requirements PDF Print E-mail
People who want to practice massage therapy in New Mexico are required (with certain exceptions such as physicians and nurses) to have a massage therapy license. To qualify for this license, the applicant is required to have at least 650 clock hours of massage education, pass the national licensure exam, the New Mexico jurisprudence exam, and have a high school diploma or GED. Our massage therapy program is a great preparation for these requirements and, in fact, exceeds the requirements for licensure.

Crystal Mountain is licensed by the New Mexico State Board of Massage. Since the Board’s inception, New Mexico has used the National Certification Exam as its state licensure exam.

Those who pass the NCE receive two credentials:
Licensed Massage Therapist, State of New Mexico
Nationally Certified Massage &Bodywork Therapist

Crystal Mountain does not accept transfer hours from other schools. However, students with previous massage therapy education may be able to complete class hours at Crystal Mountain for credit towards state licensure.

Grading and Student Evaluation PDF Print E-mail
We use many different techniques to monitor a student’s progress and areas of strength or potential difficulty. These include: visual observation, verbal and kinesthetic assessment of student competency, written evaluations, quizzes and exams. Students are given progress reports when they have completed 25%, 50%, and 75% of the program.

A student is considered to be making satisfactory progress if s/he is meeting attendance requirements, meeting requirements for student standards of conduct, and maintaining a grade point average of  70% or higher. If a student is not making satisfactory progress, the student meets with the Director to develop a plan for improvement.

Students may be placed on probation or dismissed for unsatisfactory progress.

Evaluation of massage techniques:
There are at least five times during the program that a student provides a massage for a faculty member and gets written and verbal feedback on that particular massage. Our evaluation considers qualities such as connectedness as well as skill in executing massage therapy strokes.

Evaluation of academic knowledge:
We give regular quizzes in Anatomy and Physiology in order to monitor student progress in this area and to encourage students to keep up with the material. Midterm and final examinations are also given to help students summarize and absorb what they have learned. We also provide a written massage final exam covering the material presented in all of the massage and ethics classes. An average passing grade of 70 or above is required for graduation from the program.

There are two numerical grades that are recorded on each student’s transcript. These grades are determined as follows:

The Anatomy and Physiology final grade is based on -
A. 50% from classroom participation
B. 50% from quizzes and examinations

The Massage/Bodywork final grade is based on-
A. 60% from the practical final exam
B. 40% from the written massage final exam
